3 and 4 Year Old Update

I have been such a slacker! I really wanted to keep this blog as a way to document everything about my boys. I still would like to have a place to keep all my memories and then will hopefully be able to have some time to put those memories into a book. I was reviewing some of my previous posts and noticed that I wanted to try to post an update about the boys and what they could do, every six months. Since I was very impressed with my boys this morning, I really wanted to get this written down somewhere, so here goes...

Ryan is 4 and Devin is 3...I am going to talk about them at the same time because surprisingly they can both do a lot of the same things. This morning for example, they both really impressed me with what they were able to read. I read them a book this morning and the end of the book had flashcards. The boys noticed them and wanted me to cut them out. I did and figured I would just see if they could read some of the words.

Ryan has known pretty much all of the consonant letter sounds and some vowel sounds for a while now and he's been trying to sound out words, so I thought this would be a good way to see what he can do. These words were in isolation, with no pictures or any clues to what the words were. Ryan is getting really good at sounding things out and was able to figure out some of the words. A few of the words Ryan was able to read were: cat, apple, star, fish, truck, cake, bed, and bus.

Devin knows most of the consonant letter sounds and some vowel sounds. He was able to read the words: dog, book, sun, and monkey.

For a few months now, the boys have also been interested in addition. They can add numbers with sums up to 10. Just the other day Ryan even said, "what's 100+0?" He answered, "100!" He understands that any number plus 0 is that number. Ryan is now able to count up to 30 without help and with some help, or reminders about that it's not 30 ten, it's 40, he can count even higher.

Devin can count up to 20 on his own. He is also able to add too which just absolutely amazes me. He really surprised me the other day that he is able to recognize double digit numbers...I don't think I've ever even taught him double-digit numbers, but sure enough, he pointed out 66, 45, etc... and was able to say what they were.

Oh and Ryan knows most of the states...Devin knows about half. I took a video a few months back. I'll see if I can locate it.

Found it! It's not that great, but he tends to get silly when the camera is on. :0)

It's strange, most people think since I am a teacher that I must teach these kids all the time, but the fact of the matter is, I don't. Of course, as we go about our day I point out things, ask questions, or whatever, but it's not like I sit there and we practice math or reading. I am just impressed with all that they know without me doing that with them.

I am really going to try to keep up with this. I really enjoyed looking back at my previous posts and reading about all the cute, funny things the boys were doing at the time. I tend to forget things easily and so that is why it is really important to keep up on this.
